As a member of House Phiarlan, Serpa was trained from a young age to lead a double life: a singer famed for his steady tenor tones and a spy trained to listen to the smallest clue in a conversation. House Phiarlan is infamous for their spy network, and Serpa was one of the best from a young age. He quickly took to the arcane arts and showed an affinity for planting ideas in the minds of others and making others see what he wanted them to see.
Like most members of his house, Serpa went through the traditional Dragon’s Lair rite of passage at the age of 16. After having been beaten to within an inch of his life, he manifested what every member of his house dreams of: The Mark of Shadows, which sits glowing on his left hand. He quickly gained influence in his house, but with that influence came knowledge of the House’s less savory dealings. Between the Dragon’s Lair and the shady elements of his House, Serpa started to have doubts as to the amount of good he was doing with his life.
One day, about 5 years after the Dragon’s Lair, Serpa faced a foe, Leonaris, who had been sent to kill him. Not foreign to the idea of attempts on his life, Serpa initially faced his challenger with an air of nonchalance. However, it quickly became apparent that this assassin was a close match for his skills. The battle spilled over into the nearby marketplace and a nearby citizen was caught in the crossfire and suddenly manifested his own Aberrant Dragonmark. Seeing the danger presented to the citizens, Serpa put aside his differences with the assassin and took the monster down alongside his former opponent.
This provided Serpa with an opportunity that he didn’t know he was waiting for: a chance to escape the duties and responsibilities of a House he no longer believed in. With the help of Leonaris, and Serpa’s own illusionary talents, Serpa faked his own death and found a new purpose in a group of monster hunters.
